Echo 3

Echo 3 is an epic action thriller set along the Colombia-Venezuela border, created by Mark Boal and based on the Israeli award-winning series 'When Heroes Fly'. Territory Studio was brought on to develop innovative story-telling visuals and VFX for the series' military backdrop and dynamic remote setting. The series follows scientist Amber Chesborough's disappearance, and her brother Alex 'Bambi' Chesborough and husband Prince Haas — both US Army Delta Force operators — as they wade through the jungle to find her. Territory delivered VFX shots including CGI drone replacements and drone POV Graphics across four episodes.

Drones play an integral role in the show's narrative, as Bambi and Prince use them to survey terrain and develop rescue strategies. Territory Studio developed several drone designs before settling on a sleek, compact version mirroring the latest in military technology, with a light-weight frame, foldable mechanics, and bird-like wings.

The heads-up display (HUD) through which the main characters view the drone's line-of-sight takes inspiration from existing military displays, presenting an elegant representation of modern screen technologies. The HUD's ability to exhibit visuals in heat-vision or night-time vision is a testament to the team's meticulous, realistic, forward-looking interpretation of military tech.

A key feature of the HUD design was Threat Detection — the ability to differentiate between armed and unarmed visual targets, playing a deciding role in revealing friends and foes and how many enemies the characters will face in their mission.
